What you actually give up with the cheapest car, and what you don't

The entry-level category is the right answer far more often than people expect. Two or three passengers with cabin luggage, a stay built around a city and its day trips, roads that are surfaced the whole way: that is the majority of trips to Morocco, and a small economical car covers all of it. It is also the easiest thing to park in a medina-adjacent street and the cheapest to refuel on a long motorway run.

What you give up is margin, not capability. Four adults with hold luggage will be tight. A sustained mountain climb with a full load will be slow rather than impossible. And the air conditioning in the smallest engines works harder in July than it does in April, which matters more in Marrakech or Agadir than it does on the coast. None of that is a reason to pay more if your trip does not ask for it.

One practical point worth knowing before booking cheap. The lowest daily rate and the lowest total cost are not the same number, and the gap is usually fuel and tolls rather than the rental itself. A car that drinks less on the motorway can undo a small difference in daily price within two long drives. Compare what the whole week costs, not what the first day costs.
