Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is one of the closest airports to its own city in Morocco: six kilometres from runway to centre, about a quarter of an hour by road. It has three terminals, T1, T2 and T3. That detail matters when you agree a pick-up: name the terminal, not just the airport. A flight landing at T3 and a car described as being "at Ménara" is all it takes for two people to lose twenty minutes looking for each other.

Once you are driving, almost everything is close. Hivernage is four kilometres away, Guéliz five, the Medina six. Only the Palmeraie stretches out, at fourteen. In other words, the neighbourhood you sleep in barely changes your driving time from the airport — but it changes parking a great deal, far easier in Guéliz than around the Medina, where the streets narrow and you usually finish on foot.

Ménara is also the starting point for the southern roads: the Atlas, the Ourika valley, Ouarzazate. None of them begins at the airport — they start on the far side of the city, which you therefore have to cross. Building that crossing into an early departure keeps you out of city-centre traffic at the school run, and easily saves an hour over a day on the road.

What to have ready on arrival

Bring the main driver’s licence and an ID card or passport. The deposit depends on the agency: some cars are rented with a deposit, others with none. When one is required, it is paid at the counter and returned when the car comes back; the amount is shown on each vehicle page and Loccor never collects it. The form of the deposit is set by the agency.

A foreign licence in the Latin alphabet is accepted; otherwise bring an international permit. Walk around the car with the agent and photograph any scratches before setting off: that is your best protection when handing it back.
