The compact: the default choice for most trips to Morocco

A compact sits between the economy car and the saloon, and for a great many visitors it is the sweet spot. It takes four adults without anyone folding themselves in, it holds two large suitcases, and it still parks in streets where a bigger car has to keep circling. On the motorway it is quiet enough to make Casablanca to Marrakech a pleasant drive rather than an endurance test.

It becomes the wrong choice in two situations. If you are two people staying inside one city, you are paying for space you will never use, and the economy car does the same job for less. At the other end, if the plan includes unsurfaced tracks or a mountain pass with five people aboard, a compact will do it but without any reserve. The category is generous, not limitless.

If you have any doubt about the gearbox, this is the category where an automatic is easiest to find and cheapest to add. It is worth the difference in Tangier and Fes, where hill starts and tight junctions are constant, and it makes very little difference on the Atlantic coast, where the roads are flat and open.
