Why rent a car in Ouarzazate?

Renting a car in Ouarzazate is still the simplest way to travel at your own pace: public transport covers the distances between the city centre, the airport and the surrounding sights poorly. With a vehicle you leave when you want and stop where you want.

On Loccor, every agency in Ouarzazate is approved before going live: contact details, fleet and terms are checked.

Ouarzazate, Morocco: gateway to the desert, the kasbahs and the southern valleys

Ouarzazate is less a destination than a starting point. The town stretches along Avenue Mohammed V below the Taourirt kasbah, and almost everything people come to see lies outside it: the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou some thirty kilometres to the north-west, the Skoura palm grove forty-five kilometres to the east, the Drâa valley to the south. Without a car, each of these trips depends on a shared taxi or an organised tour; with one, each fits into a morning.

Ouarzazate airport (OZZ) sits right next to town, four kilometres from the centre by road: under ten minutes. From Marrakech you arrive on the N9 over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which tops out at 2,260 metres: about 200 km and close to four hours once the bends are counted. Eastwards, the N10 runs to Skoura, Kelaat M’Gouna, the Dades valley and Tinghir, some 170 km away. Southwards, the N9 carries on through Agdz, 70 km out, then follows the Drâa palm groves to Zagora, about 160 km away.

This is pre-Saharan plateau country, more than 1,100 metres up: summers are very hot and dry, winters sunny but cold at night. In winter the Tichka can get snow and close for a few hours, so check the pass before leaving Marrakech or heading back. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for driving, and also the ones when demand is highest.

In town, driving is easy: wide avenues, little traffic, and parking along Avenue Mohammed V and around Place Al Mouahidine, where attendants watch over cars for a few dirhams. Out of town, distance is what matters: fuel stations thin out towards the Drâa and the Dades, so fill up as soon as the gauge drops to half. On mountain roads, allow generous journey times and avoid driving after dark.

Three classic days out start here. The first goes to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO World Heritage ksar, with a stop at the Atlas film studios, five kilometres west on the Marrakech road. The second heads east to the palm grove and kasbahs of Skoura, then on to Kelaat M’Gouna and the Valley of Roses. The third runs down the Drâa valley through Agdz, past palm groves and ksour, to Zagora. For the Todra gorges or the Merzouga dunes, plan a night there.

For the town and trips on tarmac, a small car is enough: Aït Ben Haddou, Skoura and Zagora are all reached on surfaced roads. An SUV mainly adds comfort and ground clearance on the tracks out to the more remote kasbahs. For crossing the Tichka fully loaded, or heading to the desert with four people and luggage, a more powerful car makes the climbs easier. Unlimited mileage matters more here than anywhere: distances in the south add up fast.

Parking in Ouarzazate

The handiest areas to pick up or drop off a car in Ouarzazate are Avenue Mohammed V, Place Al Mouahidine. Inside the medinas, driving is difficult or simply not allowed: the local habit is to park on the edge and continue on foot.

Street parking is usually watched by an attendant, paid a few dirhams when you leave. Hotels and shopping centres have gated car parks, safer for an overnight stay.

Requirements for renting a car in Ouarzazate

Each agency in Ouarzazate sets its own terms, but Moroccan practice is consistent: minimum age 21, a driving licence held for at least two years, an ID card or passport. Some premium categories are reserved for drivers over 25.

A national licence is enough if it uses the Latin alphabet. Otherwise an international permit is required. Bring an identity document too. The deposit depends on the agency: Loccor offers cars with a deposit and others with none. When one is required, it is paid at the counter and returned when you bring the car back; the amount is shown on each vehicle page, and Loccor never collects it — the form of the deposit is set by the agency.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Ouarzazate?

Ouarzazate has a small market: few agencies, and demand that peaks in spring, autumn and the holidays, when desert tours fill up. The available fleet shrinks fast at those times. The price shown is the agency’s; Loccor adds a service fee, itemised in the price breakdown before you confirm.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Ouarzazate?

A valid driving licence and an identity document or passport. The deposit depends on the agency: some cars are rented with a deposit, others with none, and each vehicle page shows it before booking — the amount, or “No deposit”. A national licence is enough if it is written in the Latin alphabet; otherwise an international driving permit is required. Only the agency can confirm its exact conditions.

Can I pick the car up at Ouarzazate airport?

Yes. Ouarzazate airport (OZZ) is 4 km from the centre. It has few flights: many visitors actually arrive by road from Marrakech. If that is your case, compare the cars available in Marrakech too, which has its own page on Loccor. Pick the airport as your collection point. The form has no flight-number field: send your arrival time through the support channel in your account once the booking is confirmed.

How old do you need to be to rent a car in Ouarzazate?

The usual floor is 21 with a licence held for at least two years. Luxury vehicles and large SUVs are often restricted to drivers over 25. Each agency in Ouarzazate states its rule on the vehicle page.

Can the car be returned in a city other than Ouarzazate?

One-way rentals depend on the agency: some accept them with a return fee, others do not. They cannot be booked online: ask the agency from your account once your booking is made. If you need one, choose the Flexible plan: if the agency says no, you can cancel up to 72 hours before pickup and get your deposit back (the service fee is not refunded).

Should you book ahead in Ouarzazate?

Yes. Ouarzazate has few agencies online, and the desert-tour seasons, spring, autumn and the school holidays, empty the fleet quickly. Allow two to three weeks ahead at those times. The rest of the year, a week is usually enough.

How do I find cheap car rental in Ouarzazate?

Compare the cars listed in Ouarzazate: each listing shows the price per day set by the agency, and the Economy category is the cheapest in the catalogue. Most cars have a lower rate for longer rentals, so the price per day drops as the rental gets longer. The total, service fee included, is shown before you confirm.
