In France, Belgium and Switzerland, many bank cards carry the word “DEBIT” on the front. To hold a deposit without taking the money, the agency's terminal runs a pre-authorisation. How much deposit to expect by vehicle category

For a compact, expect 3,000 to 10,000 dirhams. For an SUV, 4,000 to 20,000 dirhams, averaging close to 8,200 dirhams. Saloons ask 7,000 dirhams and minibuses 7,000 to 10,000 dirhams. Before you sign and take the keys, walk round the car with the agent. Take your time: this check is what protects you on return.
