Nador: the lagoon, the port and the roads of the eastern Rif

Nador lives around the Marchica, the largest lagoon on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast: the city stretches along its shore and the corniche is its main traffic artery, busiest in the evening. To the north, the road runs some twelve kilometres to the port of Beni Ensar, where the ferries leave for Spain. Further out, Cape Three Forks takes about forty kilometres of road that narrows and roughens over the final bends: take it slowly, and in daylight.

East, the long beach at Saidia and the Moulouya estuary make a gentle day with a proper swim in it. All three are close enough that a single day can hold two of them without rushing.

In and around the city a small car does everything asked of it. The Cap des Trois Fourches is the deciding factor: the final stretch deteriorates, and while people do it in city cars, they do it slowly and nervously. A little ground clearance turns that drive from an endurance test into the highlight of the trip.
