In northern Morocco, Tetouan is the place to take the wheel

Tetouan holds an unusual position: mountains on one side, the Mediterranean a quarter of an hour away on the other. Martil is about ten kilometres out, Mdiq and Cabo Negro roughly twenty, and the coast road then continues north towards Fnideq. Going north, the N2 dual carriageway reaches Tangier in about sixty kilometres; there is no motorway yet, and at rush hour the drive can take more than an hour and a half. Going south, the N2 climbs into the Rif to Chefchaouen in some sixty kilometres, a little over an hour of sustained but well-surfaced bends.

The small Sania Ramel airport sits just outside town to the north, a few minutes by road, though most travellers arrive through Tangier Ibn Battouta, an hour away. The Unesco-listed medina is walking territory only: park around Place Moulay El Mehdi or the Feddan before going in. The Andalusian centre, with its white avenues inherited from the Spanish protectorate, remains perfectly drivable, but the streets tighten as soon as you approach the old ramparts and their gates.

The beach season tips the whole city. From June to September the coastline from Martil to Fnideq fills with families from Fes, Rabat and Europe, and the coast road starts behaving like an urban boulevard, with journey times easily doubling in the late afternoon. For the rest of the year Tetouan returns to being a student and administrative town, calm behind the wheel. Winter, damp and green, gives the Rif its finest landscapes but demands care on the Chefchaouen road after rain.

Two different kinds of driving meet in Tetouan. The old town is a dense grid of narrow streets where a car is simply the wrong tool, and the Spanish-built quarter around it is wide, ordered and easy. Beyond the city, the N2 towards Chefchaouen is a proper mountain road: well surfaced, generously engineered, and still demanding of attention because the bends are constant and the drops beside them are real. Drive it in daylight the first time, and do not trust an estimate that assumes an average speed you will never actually hold.

The Mediterranean starts a few minutes away, and Martil is where the city goes in summer. Following the coast east on the Oued Laou road gives you one of the least-known coastal drives in Morocco, with small beaches that stay quiet well into July. Inland, Chefchaouen is the natural half-day, and the pairing that works best is coast in the morning, mountains in the afternoon, because the light suits each in that order. Very few bases in Morocco let you do both before dinner.

A small car is a clear advantage here, for two quite different reasons. It threads the tight streets of the old centre, and it places better in the bends of the N2 than something tall and soft. That said, if there are four of you and luggage, do not go below a car with a real engine: the climb out of Tetouan towards Chefchaouen is sustained, and an overloaded city car will spend the whole ascent in third. Comfort here is a function of the road, not of the seats.

The handiest areas to pick up or drop off a car in Tetouan are Ensanche, Avenue Mohammed V, Place Al Feddan, Bab Okla. Inside the medinas, driving is difficult or simply not allowed: the local habit is to park on the edge and continue on foot.
