Renting an electric car in Morocco: honest about the charging network

An electric car works well in Morocco for a specific shape of trip: a city stay with day trips, based somewhere with charging at the accommodation, in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech or Tangier. Within that pattern it is quiet, cheap to run and entirely practical, and the motorway corridor between the main cities is the best-served part of the country.

It works much less well for a touring itinerary into the south or the mountains. Charging points thin out quickly once you leave the Tangier-Agadir axis, and planning a day around where you can charge stops being a detail and becomes the itinerary. Anyone driving to Merzouga, into the Anti-Atlas or along the remote stretches of the Rif should choose a combustion vehicle and not think about it again.

The honest advice is to decide by route rather than by principle. Sketch the week's driving first, then ask whether every overnight stop has somewhere to plug in. If the answer is yes, electric is a genuinely good choice. If there is a single night where you are not sure, the anxiety will cost you more than the fuel would have.
