Two banks, one river and a handful of bridges

Rabat makes more sense once you accept it is two cities: Rabat and Sale, split by the Bouregreg and joined by a limited number of bridges. At peak hours, that is where everything is decided. Leaving the conurbation, the A5 climbs to Kenitra in 40 km, the A1 drops to Casablanca in 90 km, usually an hour. Meknes is 140 km away, a little over ninety minutes. The beaches of Temara and Skhirat are twenty to thirty minutes down the coast road.

Rabat-Sale airport is a mere 10 km out, on the far bank: quick to reach, unless you cross the river as offices empty. Handovers happen mainly in Agdal, Hassan, Hay Riad and Souissi. Parking is more orderly here than in other large Moroccan cities, with marked bays and street attendants. The medina and the Oudayas quarter are strictly walking territory, so leave the car on the edge rather than committing yourself to the alleyways and their unforgiving corners.

As an administrative capital, Rabat fills up midweek and unwinds at weekends, the reverse of tourist cities. May concentrates the crowds around the Mawazine festival, which saturates the routes near Souissi and Sale. In summer the city mostly serves as a staging point between the north and Casablanca, while families from the region head for the beaches south of town. The Atlantic climate stays temperate year-round. A car pays off for day trips: Kenitra, Moulay Bousselham or the Maamora forest are all within reach.

Drivers arriving from Casablanca notice the difference within ten minutes. Rabat moves at an administrative pace: lanes are respected, tram tracks are taken seriously, and the whole city feels less like a negotiation. What does require attention is the tram itself, which has priority and its own reserved corridors through the centre. Treat a tram lane as you would a railway line and the rest of the driving is genuinely undemanding, which is why so many visitors use the capital as their first Moroccan driving day before heading anywhere harder.

Cross the river in the morning and Sale gives you a different, older city within minutes. Head north up the coast and the lagoons at Moulay Bousselham are a birdwatcher's day and a very quiet beach for everyone else. Inland, Meknes and the Roman site at Volubilis make a full and unhurried day, with the hill town of Moulay Idriss between them. None of these needs an early start or a long drive, which is the particular luxury of being based in Rabat rather than further south.

A compact car covers almost everything a visitor to Rabat will do. The city parks easily by Moroccan standards, the coastal roads are paved and gentle, and nothing on the usual day-trip list asks for ground clearance. Size becomes worth paying for only in two cases: a family that will also drive to Fes or Marrakech and wants motorway comfort, or a trip that continues into the Middle Atlas, where a little more engine makes the climbs pleasant rather than laboured.

The handiest areas to pick up or drop off a car in Rabat are Agdal, Hassan, Souissi, Hay Riad. Inside the medinas, driving is difficult or simply not allowed: the local habit is to park on the edge and continue on foot.

Street parking is usually watched by an attendant, paid a few dirhams when you leave. Hotels and shopping centres have gated car parks, safer for an overnight stay.
