Renting a Car at a Moroccan Airport: Process, Pitfalls and Practical Tips

Plenty of trips to Morocco start in an arrivals hall: Mohammed V in Casablanca, Menara in Marrakech, Ibn Battouta in Tangier, Al Massira in Agadir. Collecting the car as you step off the plane saves you a taxi, as long as you sort out three things in advance: your arrival time, cash for the tolls and where you will meet for the return.

Moroccan airports have two ways of handing over keys. The big international brands run desks in the arrivals hall, where queues build quickly when several flights land one after another.

Delayed flights and late arrivals: the one precaution that matters

Taxi, train or bus from Casablanca or Rabat airport: the other options

In Casablanca, Mohammed V airport has its railway station beneath Terminal 1: ONCF’s Al Bidaoui train runs to Casa-Voyageurs and Casa-Port. ONDA, the airport operator, also runs the Aérobus shuttle bus to Casa-Port. Then there are the grand taxis outside the terminal: agree the fare before you get in.

At Rabat-Salé, an ALSA shuttle bus links the airport with Rabat-Agdal and Rabat-Ville stations; the tram does not serve the airport. Taxis wait outside the terminal.

These options work for getting into town. If you are heading straight on to another city, the beach or the desert, a car handed over on arrival saves you one more connection. Timetables and fares change: check them on the ONCF, ONDA and ALSA websites before you travel.

Leaving the car park, small change and the first few kilometres

At the hand-over, ask the agent who pays the airport parking ticket. The car may have been waiting there for hours, and if nothing has been arranged, the barrier will ask you for the money.

Before you leave the terminal, take out some dirhams at the cash machine in the arrivals hall. If your route uses the motorway, tolls at the manned booths are mostly paid in cash; foreign cards sometimes work there, not always. Keep a few 20 and 50 dirham notes and some coins in the door pocket.

Planning the return on your departure day

On the day you fly home, leave plenty of time. Before boarding you have to return the car, go through the security check at the terminal entrance and then passport control, and in summer the queues get long.

The return itself is quick: a walk round the car, a look at the fuel gauge and, if the agency took a deposit, getting it back. The evening before, agree on the exact meeting point with the agency, in the car park or outside departures.
