Agafay: a stone desert at the gates of the red city

Agafay is nothing like the sand seas of Merzouga: it is a desert of stone and pale earth, rolling hills worn down by erosion. You feel far from everything, even though you left Gueliz and Jemaa el-Fna square only a short while ago.

On a clear day, the Atlas peaks, snow-capped in winter, close off the horizon. Come in the late afternoon if you can: the low light picks out every ridge.

Which route to take from Marrakech: staying on tarmac

Leave Marrakech to the south-west and take the Amizmiz road towards the Lalla Takerkoust dam: it is the road that crosses the Agafay plateau.

These roads are paved. Small signs along the way point to the camps and ecolodges; before you set off, note the exact name of yours and ask it for its GPS location.

Do you need a 4x4, or will a small car do for Agafay?

Everyone asks. For most of the camps and ecolodges in the area, you do not need a 4x4.

Between the paved road and the camp entrances there is usually a dirt track, longer or shorter, kept up by the camps themselves. A small car gets through at walking pace if you steer round the bigger stones. A higher SUV such as the Dacia Duster saves you worrying about the underside. If in doubt, call your accommodation the day before: they know the state of their own track.

The best part starts in the late afternoon, when the hills turn pink, then mauve, as the sun goes down.

After tea and a tagine under the tent, you still have to drive back to Marrakech, and the night is pitch black: there is no street lighting on these roads. Use full beam when nothing is coming the other way, drive slowly and expect to meet a flock of sheep or a camel on the road.

Marrakech-Menara airport is on the south-west side of the city, the same side as Agafay, so you do not have to cross the centre. The time depends mostly on where your camp is; ask your accommodation how long the drive takes from the airport.

Marrakech desert tours or your own rental car: which is better for Agafay?

For Agafay, a car is enough: the Amizmiz road towards the Lalla Takerkoust dam crosses the plateau on tarmac, and you leave when you like, ideally late in the afternoon for the light. Organised desert tours make more sense for Merzouga, several days away, although that trip can also be driven on paved roads up to the first lodges.
