Saïdia by car: the “Blue Pearl” beach, the Moulouya and the Beni Snassen

In the far north-east of Morocco, right by the Algerian border, Saïdia runs along one of the longest beaches in the country, on the Mediterranean. People call it the “Blue Pearl”. Here the car is mostly for getting out of the resort: the Moulouya estuary, the caves and the Beni Snassen mountains all lie away from the beach, and so do both airports.

Saïdia, Morocco: where is the “Blue Pearl”?

Saïdia sits in the far north-east of Morocco, on the Mediterranean, in Berkane province. The Moulouya river flows to the west; to the east, the Oued Kiss marks the border with Algeria. The resort stretches along the beach, with a marina and newer residential districts next to the small old town.

On a holiday in Saïdia, Morocco, the car is mainly for getting out of the resort: the Moulouya estuary, Berkane, the Beni Snassen mountains and Oujda all lie away from the beach. Distances from Saïdia are listed further down.

Where to hire a car for Saïdia?

Two airports serve Saïdia. The closer one is Oujda-Angads (OUD), around fifty kilometres away. Nador El Aroui (NDR) is a little further. From central Nador, it is about 80 kilometres by road to Saïdia.

On Loccor, check the Nador, Berkane and Oujda pages: they show the cars listed for your dates. If you pick up in Nador, in town or at the airport, you then just follow the coast east to Saïdia.

Car rental in Oujda: the city and Sidi Yahya oasis

For car rental in Oujda, the city's page on Loccor shows the cars listed for your dates; if nothing fits, look at Nador or Berkane. Oujda-Angads airport is about 15 kilometres from the city.

In Oujda, park near the medina or Bab Sidi Abdelwahab, the main gate of the old town, then carry on into the souks on foot.

On the edge of the city, Sidi Yahya oasis is home to the mausoleum of Sidi Yahya Ben Younes, a place of pilgrimage surrounded by trees and springs, very busy at weekends with families from Oujda. You get there by car; come on a weekday or in the morning if you can.

Oujda is about 60 kilometres from Saïdia: you can stay there and go to the beach for the day, or the other way round.

How far is it from Saïdia?

The distances below are by road from Saïdia, rounded. In summer, allow extra time: traffic slows down around the resort.

Berkane: about 25 km. Oujda: about 60 km. Nador: about 80 km. For Fès, add roughly 330 km from Oujda.

What to see around Saïdia by car?

Just west of the resort, the Moulouya estuary is a wetland listed as a Ramsar site and a site of biological and ecological interest. People come here to watch birds, away from the bustle of the beach: bring binoculars and walk along the water.

Heading south, the road goes through Berkane and climbs into the Beni Snassen mountains. Tafoughalt is about 25 kilometres from Berkane, so around fifty from Saïdia. The village is known for the Pigeons' Cave, a prehistoric site close by, and the Camel Cave is in the same range. The loop fits into half a day, and the mountain air is a welcome change after the beach.

Tips for driving in Saïdia

In summer, Saïdia fills up and traffic slows near the beach and the marina. For day trips, set off early in the morning and be back before the end of the day.

In the Beni Snassen, the road is winding: drive slowly, leave yourself room on the bends and avoid driving at night. A small city car is enough for every trip described here.
