Essaouira: the medina, the trade winds and the Atlantic roads

Essaouira is a town you explore on foot and leave by car. The walled medina is entirely pedestrian, so the car stays outside, in one of the guarded car parks at the gates. South of town, the road follows the bay to the village of Diabat, five kilometres away, then carries on to Sidi Kaouki and its long beach, twenty-five kilometres out. The same distance north brings you to Moulay Bouzerktoun, a small fishing village that has become one of the best-known wave and windsurfing spots in the country.

Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU) lies seventeen kilometres south-east of town, on the Agadir road: around twenty minutes on the N1, with no need to cross the centre. Inland, the N8, which took over the old regional road 207 in 2018, runs through argan country to Chichaoua and on to Marrakech, about 180 km and two and a half hours of wide, steady road. Southwards, the N1 hugs the coast to Agadir, 175 km that are far more winding than the map suggests; allow closer to three hours than two.

The wind sets the calendar here. The trade winds blow for much of the year, strongest from May to September: they keep the summer cool, so Essaouira stays noticeably milder than Agadir or Marrakech, but on some afternoons they make the beach hard work and whip up the sand. July and August also bring the crowds, and the car parks at the gates fill early, so arriving in the morning saves time. Driving in town is straightforward: a few broad avenues, a seafront and a medina you simply do not drive into. The only real decision is which gate to aim for before you arrive, Bab Marrakech on the east side, or Bab Sbaa and the area around Place Moulay Hassan by the port. Out of town, the wind is what to plan for: on the coast road and the open plateaus, side gusts push the car around, especially when it is loaded. Keep both hands on the wheel and ease off when a lorry comes the other way.

Two classic days out start here, heading in opposite directions. The first goes south: a stop in Diabat, the village that local legend links to Jimi Hendrix, then Sidi Kaouki, with its vast, wind-swept beach, before driving back the same way in the late afternoon. The second heads north to Moulay Bouzerktoun, where you can watch windsurfers take on the wave from the rocks. The Agadir road deserves a full day of its own: the bends come one after another, and the best stops are on the cliffs along the way, not at the far end.

For the town and the nearby beaches, a small car does everything you need, and it is far easier to park. If Marrakech or Agadir is on the plan, a heavier, more planted car copes better with crosswinds and is less tiring over three hours of driving. Families, and surfers with boards to carry, will want to look at a seven-seater. Unlimited mileage means you can make the long round trips without watching the counter.
