Tafraoute, Morocco, by car from Agadir: road, painted rocks and the Ammeln valley
Tafraoute is an Anti-Atlas town set among pink granite boulders, in the heart of the Ammeln valley. From Agadir, allow about three hours of mountain driving via Ait Baha. What you get at the end: few crowds, terraced villages clinging to the slopes and, in late winter, almond trees in blossom.

Where is Tafraoute in Morocco?
Tafraoute lies in the Anti-Atlas, south-east of Agadir, in the Souss-Massa region. The town sits at the bottom of the Ammeln valley, surrounded by rounded granite boulders and terraced villages.
Tachelhit, the Amazigh language of the Souss, is the main language; French is understood in hotels and shops.
Agadir to Tafraoute by car: distance and time
Via the R105 and Ait Baha, Tafraoute is about 160 kilometres from Agadir, roughly three hours' drive. The last stretch is a narrow, winding mountain road: drive in daylight and leave yourself time.
Fill up before leaving the Souss plain and download an offline map: mobile coverage can drop in the passes.
The painted rocks of Tafraoute
A few kilometres south of town, Belgian artist Jean Vérame painted granite boulders blue, red and purple in 1984. Locals touch them up from time to time, and the site has become Tafraoute's best-known sight.
The last part is a dirt track: a small car manages in dry weather if you drive slowly, but ask locally after rain.
What to see around Tafraoute
The Ammeln valley makes a loop from Tafraoute, village to village, below the Jbel Lekst massif. The palm groves and gorges of the Anti-Atlas suit short hikes.
In late winter, almond trees in blossom draw many visitors: the area is known for its almonds.
Tafraoute via Tiznit: the loop with Mirleft
From Tiznit, Tafraoute is about 107 kilometres along the R104, a mountain road that crosses the Anti-Atlas at the Kerdous pass. It is the natural way in when you come from the coast.
That makes a loop possible: drive from Agadir to Tafraoute on the inland road, come down to Tiznit, then reach the ocean at Mirleft, about 42 kilometres from Tiznit, before heading back up the coast to Agadir. The direction hardly matters; just keep the mountain section for daylight.
Tiznit is the practical stop before the mountains: fill up and buy supplies there, and park outside the medina. Take the Kerdous bends slowly and use a lower gear on the way down.
Which car to hire for Tafraoute?
A standard car is fine on the paved road from Agadir; an SUV is more comfortable on the tracks around town. An automatic makes the many mountain bends easier.
As of 3 October 2026, there are very few rental cars in Agadir itself. Check the Agadir page, or start from Marrakech, where the choice is much wider, and drive down to Agadir on the A7 motorway.
