Morocco visa from the UK: passport, e-visa and driving licence

British tourists can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days. What catches people out is passport validity and, if you plan to drive, the version of the international driving permit. Below is what the UK government and other official sources say, plus what rental agencies ask for at the counter.

Do you need a visa for Morocco from the UK?

No. The UK government’s travel advice says you can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism. Canadian, French, Belgian and Spanish tourists get the same 90 days. Do US citizens need a visa for Morocco? Not for visits of 90 days or less, according to the US State Department, which asks for a passport with at least six months’ validity on entry.

To stay longer, you apply for an extension in Morocco. Canada’s travel advice tells visitors to go to the local police at least 15 days before the 90 days run out.

What is the Morocco e-visa (eVisa), and who needs it?

The e-visa is for nationalities that need a visa to enter Morocco. On the official portal, acces-maroc.ma, you enter your nationality and country of residence to see if it applies to you.

With a British passport and a tourist trip of 90 days or less, there is nothing to apply for before you fly.

How long must your passport be valid?

The UK government says your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you arrive. Spain asks its citizens for more than 6 months of validity, and Canada for 6 months beyond the date you leave Morocco.

To be safe, travel on a passport still valid 6 months after you get home, with blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Morocco does not let foreign visitors in on a national ID card, so EU travellers need a passport too.

What driving licence do you need to hire a car in Morocco?

The UK government says you need both the 1968 version of the international driving permit and your UK driving licence with you in the car; Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 version.

At the counter, agencies usually ask for drivers aged 21 or over who have held a licence for at least two years, plus an ID card or passport. Some premium cars are kept for drivers over 25. Each car page shows the agency’s conditions, including whether the car comes with or without a deposit.

Dual nationals: what changes if you are also a Moroccan citizen

Morocco treats its own nationals as Moroccan first. Canada warns that airport staff regularly ask dual citizens for their Moroccan national ID card, so keep it with your other passport. For the trip home, the UK requires British citizens to carry a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement.

Car hire works the same for everyone: the agency checks your licence and ID, not your nationality.

Before you leave: the checklist

Pack a passport with at least 3 months left after arrival (6 months gives you a margin), your UK licence, the 1968 international driving permit, and the card or payment method you plan to use for the rental balance, paid to the agency when you pick up the car.

Entry rules change from time to time. Check the UK government’s Morocco travel advice a few days before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Morocco from the UK?

No, not for tourism up to 90 days, according to the UK government’s travel advice.

Do British citizens need a Morocco e-visa?

No. The e-visa, applied for on acces-maroc.ma, is for nationalities that need a visa. British tourists staying up to 90 days do not.

How long must my passport be valid for Morocco?

At least 3 months after the date you arrive, according to the UK government. Six months of validity leaves room if your plans change.

Can I drive in Morocco with a UK licence?

Yes, with the 1968 international driving permit: the UK government says you need both in the car.

Do Americans (US citizens) need a visa for Morocco?

Not for visits of 90 days or less, according to the US State Department, which asks for a passport with at least six months’ validity on entry. To stay longer, you apply for an extension in Morocco.

Do I need a visa to go to Morocco, and which countries are visa-free?

It depends on your nationality, and only official sources can settle it. Among the nationalities covered in this guide, British, US, Canadian, French, Belgian and Spanish tourists can stay up to 90 days without a visa. For any other passport, enter your nationality and country of residence on the official portal, acces-maroc.ma, to see what applies to you.

Does Morocco require a visa for a tourist visit of more than 90 days?

The official advice quoted in this guide describes an extension rather than a new visa: to stay longer than 90 days, you apply for an extension in Morocco, and Canada's travel advice tells visitors to go to the local police at least 15 days before the 90 days run out. If your nationality needs a visa in the first place, check the e-visa portal, acces-maroc.ma.

Morocco visa application: is there an official website to apply online from the UK?

For nationalities that need one, the e-visa application is made online on the official portal, acces-maroc.ma, where you enter your nationality and country of residence. British passport holders on a tourist trip of 90 days or less have nothing to apply for. If you live in the UK on another passport, start there with that nationality, and make sure you are on the official portal rather than a site that only looks official.
