Car rental: automatic vs manual transmission and licenses

In North America, nearly all motorists drive automatic vehicles. In Morocco, standard fleets are predominantly manual (stick shift). Automatic vehicles are in high demand: book several weeks in advance on Loccor to have a choice of automatic vehicles.

Your US state driver's license or Canadian provincial license is accepted by rental agencies: it is written in the Latin alphabet and must have been held for at least two years. An International Driving Permit (IDP, issued by AAA in the US or CAA in Canada) is therefore not required to rent.

Credit cards, currency and tipping etiquette

The Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is a closed currency, meaning you cannot easily convert large sums before departure. Withdraw cash from reliable bank ATMs (Attijariwafa bank, Bank of Africa, Banque Populaire) upon arrival at the airport terminal.

The deposit depends on the agency: some cars are rented without one. When it is required, its amount is shown on the vehicle page and its form (card hold or cash) is set by the agency; bring a Visa or Mastercard in the driver's name. Please note: American Express (Amex) has limited acceptance in Morocco outside of international luxury hotels.

In Morocco, most communication with riad hosts and tour operators takes place over WhatsApp. Roaming with US/Canadian carriers (AT&T, Verizon, Bell, Rogers) can be very expensive without travel passes.
